Dreaming dreams of a missionary church

I dream of a “missionary option”, that is, a missionary impulse capable of transforming everything, so that the Church’s customs, ways of doing things, times and schedules, language and structures can be suitably channelled for the evangelization of today’s world rather than for her self-preservation. Pope Francis, Evangelii Gaudium

To help us explore this amazing document, we are collaborating with Missio, Mill Hills and Heythrop to present a World Mission Conference with keynote speaker Rev Dr Stephen Bevans SVD

Some of his quotes:

“Overcoming poverty is not a task of charity, it is an act of justice. Like Slavery and Apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings. Sometimes it falls on a generation to be great. YOU can be that great generation. Let your greatness blossom.”

In his autobiography, Long Walk to Freedom, Mandela tells the story of his early engagement with Christianity: "The Church was as concerned with this world as the next: I saw that virtually all of the achievements of Africans seemed to have come about through the missionary work of the Church."

"There is no passion to be found playing small - in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living." "And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same."

Fifty of our members gathered recently for the Annual General Meeting  and conference of the CMU. We used the wonderfully converted victorian school next to Salford Cathedral which is now the Salford Cathedral Centre.
Pictured is Bishop Terence Brain addressing the meeting alongside Fr Rob Morland SMA

We also heard from the team at 'Just Youth' - a great project in Salford, sponsored by CMU member the Holy Ghost fathers.
In the afternoon we had a talk from Mark Wiggin, the CEO of Caritas Diocese of Salford.
